My cousin, Arlene, grows amazing flowers at her cottage on Georgian Bay. In fact, one of my previous paintings, “Bay Angel”, was of a tulip that grew in her garden. She also grows gorgeous peonies that are light and delicate and very fragrant. I borrowed one of her cut glass vases and placed a bouquet of peonies in a sunny spot on her deck. The play of light on the peonies and the glass vase captured my imagination on the spot. One of the reasons I enjoy painting flowers is because of the way light interacts with the petals, creating amazing layers of lights and shadows. This is my first flower painting that includes an inanimate object along with the flower and it is only right that it is glass which also comes alive with light. For this artist, flowers and glass are a perfect marriage. |
